Video Products Completes Executive
Conference Room at Air Products
When top level executives at Air Products go to their conference room for a meeting, they did not want have to pull out a manual to utilize their audio visual equipment. They wanted a straight-forward, fully integrated system. That was the challenge for Total Video Products, a leading audio/visual integrator for Fortune 1000, Education, and Government clients in the tri-state area.
Executives dont want to spend time learning about the equipment. says Mike Marth, who is part of the Visual Communications department at Air Products. The conference room needed to have features from several new technologies and be simple to use. The room is used for executive meetings and crisis situations.
Total Video Products utilized products from a number of manufacturers to build a seamlessly integrated system: an AMX Modero Color Touch Panel, an AMX Netlink Controller, a Da Lite Screen, a Smart Technologies Interactive Whiteboard, a Fujitsu 50 Plasma Screen, Tandberg Video Conferencing, and Clear One Audio Conferencing, were some of the products used in the system.
"It was a bit of a design and installation challenge, making sure all of Air Products different needs for this room were fulfilled" says Jim Hoeksema, Account Manager from Total Video Products. The AMX Netlinks system automatically shifts the cameras when someone speaks into any of the conference microphones, the projector's lense shift allows different size images when using the screen or the interactive whiteboard, and the furniture was custom designed to match the look and color of the rest of the room.

Commerce
Bank Puts Plasmas in All Branches
Commerce Bank, one of the nation's fastest growing financial services retailers with about 200 branches in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Delaware, came to Total Video Products with an interesting idea. They wanted to put plasma displays in each of their branches to run a series of ads and announcements for their customers.
TVP supplied NEC 42" Plasma Displays and Pioneer DVD players for each existing Commerce Bank branch, and will continue to supply this dynamic solution to future branches--Commerce is planning to add 175 more branches by 2005. As part of Commerce Bank's dedication to providing a truly different banking experience, each of these branches is open 7 days a week at convenient hours for their busy customers. The addition of Plasma Displays allow the banks to expand this commitment to customer service by providing an attractive, reliable, and highly dynamic communication tool.
Westtown
Township's
New Community Room
When Westtown Township, Pennsylvania, built a new administration building, they realized that they needed help with the audio and video aspects of their new public meeting room. Their old meeting room had a non-integrated speaker system that did not provide sufficient gain before feedback and made it difficult for township residents and board members to understand the presenters. Their new room, with 28 foot high, beamed ceilings and two walls of large windows presented specific challenges for the new audio system. The measured RT60 time of the room was xxxx seconds and any form of acoustic treatment to reduce the reverberation time was not an option. Furthermore, Township staff wanted to avoid any solution that would interfere with the bright and open feel of the room's design.
Total Video Products (TVP), a sales and integration company with over 20 years of experience with presentation technology, was selected by Westtown to provide a total solution for the meeting room. The TVP Engineering team designed the video display and control systems and decided that the main board table at the front of the room would have push-to-talk microphones with individual speakers. There was, however, still the problem of projecting the sound to the audience.
After an impressive demo from Radia Pro Systems (RPS), the TVP Engineering team realized that they had found the perfect solution for Westtown's needs. The RPS speakers were very directional and could be placed on the ceiling above the audience. Sound would be targeted to the meeting attendees, and with half the loss of standard speakers, the high ceilings would not be a problem. Also, the streamlined design of the speakers makes them easy to mount on the ceiling beams while not interfering with the aesthetic of the room design.
The installation took place in early January. TVP's installation team encountered few difficulties. Project Manager, Anthony Musumeci reports that the speakers provide a nice clean sound: "We're using them for voice reinforcement, and there is absolutely no feedback from the dozen or so other mics in the room. They cover the room very well." Sales Engineer John McCann added, "Due to the highly directional nature of these speakers there is no feedback from the microphones located just behind and below the speakers. The fact that there is only 3 dB loss for every doubling of distance versus a 6 dB loss with conventional, cone-type loudspeakers, is a huge plus. Additionally, there is less strain on the amplifier as the volume setting is twenty percent lower as compared with traditional loudspeakers ."
Reports from township staff and residents indicate that the new system is a success. TVP Salesman and Westtown Township resident, Larry Lawthers, says that the new system is "100% better than the old system. We have crystal clear audio and I've noticed that since the speakers are aimed directly at the audience, there is no stray audio or feedback from the presenters mics. Also, the room looks really good. All the wires are hidden and the speakers simply blend into the ceiling." The excellent sound quality and increased speech intelligibility has impressed everyone, and the unobtrusive design of the speakers has allowed the room to maintain its airy, open feel.
Customized
Case from JELCO Saves GlaxoSmithKline
Tens of Thousands of Dollars a Year
The
Customer
GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) is a world-leading research-based
pharmaceutical company. Headquartered in the U.K., with
operations based in the U.S., GSK owns an estimated seven
percent of the world's pharmaceutical market. The company
has leadership in four major therapeutic areas: anti-infectives,
central nervous system, respiratory and gastro-intestinal/metabolic.
In addition, it is a leader in the important area of vaccines
and has a growing portfolio of oncology products.
The
Business Need
GSK's Philadelphia office, the company's U.S. headquarters,
had recently purchased a 61-inch (64 inches with enclosure)
rear-projection Bengal display manufactured by Wilsonville,
Ore.-based Clarity Visual Systems. GSK business personnel
were using the monitor for presentations in various conference
rooms in the Philadelphia corporate office. According
to Phil Matthews, GSK's manager of infrastructure technology
& equipment, "The unit is top-heavy and awkward
to move." Because it was difficult for GSK conference
center support staff to move the monitor themselves, the
company hired professional furniture movers - at a cost
of $300 per move - every time the display needed to be
transported to one of the facility's 120 conference rooms,
or from a meeting to storage.
Having
to hire movers also meant that GSK business personnel
needed significant lead time - as much as 72 hours - when
requesting the display for their meetings.
The
size of the unit also made it difficult to properly store.
When the display was not in use, GSK conference center
support staff merely wrapped the screen in furniture moving
blankets and put it in a closet or storage area - not
the ideal way to protect a display that typically sells
for about $11,000.
The
Solution
In 2005, seeking a more efficient way to move the Bengal
display - and a more secure way to store it - GSK called
Total Video Products (TVP), a Mickleelton, N.J.-based
audio/visual and digital media integrator that supplies
equipment to corporate, education and government organizations.
After
researching possible solutions online, TVP contacted JELCO,
Inc., a Wheeling, Ill.-based solution provider for large
flat-screen monitors, interactive whiteboards and slim
profile rear screen projection TVs. "After we presented
the problem, JELCO was able to quickly develop a solution,"
says Larry Lawthers, regional sales manager at TVP. "JELCO
contacted Clarity Visual directly to find out more about
the Bengal display - they went the extra mile to determine
that their product would be able to interface with the
display. And they gave our client and us confidence by
asking us appropriate questions during the design process."
Within
one week, JELCO provided TVP with a proposal and drawings
for a custom modification of its standard ATA shipping
case that would house the Bengal display and allow easy
transport and storage of the unit by GSK's conference
center support staff. Once in position, the case's unique
EZ-LIFT counterbalanced mechanism would let the staff
easily and gently raise the display into viewing position
and then lower it back into the case for storage and transportation.
The
Result
In less than one month (about two weeks of manufacturing
time, and one week for shipping), JELCO delivered a custom-modified
ATA shipping case that met GSK's needs.
Each
member of GSK's five-person conference center support
staff now can move and set up the display. "All we
have to do is pull the lift lock release, and the display
pops up," Matthews says. "We put skirting around
it, so it looks very professional, and it's now a perfect
height for our presentations."
Where
GSK business personnel needed up to three days' lead time
to have the unit delivered for their meetings, Matthews
says, the unit now can be deployed and functional within
30 minutes. In addition, the company estimates that it
is saving between $20,000 and $30,000 per year that it
would have used to pay professional movers.
Beyond
saving time and money, the new case has helped earn accolades
for GSK's conference center staff. "It reflects positively
on Glaxo's facilities department that they now can react
quickly when they get a request for a portable display
device," Lawthers says.
